A group traveling through the desert would be easy for an earth elemental to pinpoint and surprise attack. Djinni are good, but they are mischief makers that can be bribed or bound into service.
Have your party help a Djinni defeat a Dao and gain its favor for a wish. Giant Scorpion Challenge Rating: 3 A giant scorpion makes two attacks with its claws and one attack with its poisonous stinger. Just one of these large beasts is deadly challenge for starting groups. Giant scorpions can still be a threat for higher level groups when facing three or more. Group them with normal jackals for a surprise when you shift them into human or jackal-humanoid form.

Another creature that's mostly a brain, a grell is seemingly a half bird, half jellyfish creature. They have no eyes and use a type of levitation to float. However, their skin is sensitive to vibration, and thet have an impeccable sense of hearing. They float silently waiting for the perfect moment to strike lone creatures or a straggler in a group, making it a deadly creature too.
They're a sort of telepathic fish capable of dominating lesser creatures, at one point even holding an entire empire before the gods destroyed it and freed their slaves. Falling pretty sharply in the "humanoid spider" camp, an ettercap is actually a fairly unthreatening looking creature, if you can get past its beady black eyes, claws, and face prongs. It's capable of spinning webs from its abdomen, entrapping and consuming any adventurers foolish enough to wander into its lair. A stirge is a horrifying cross between a bat and a mosquito.
Like a mosquito, a stirge survives off the blood of other living creatures. Not to mention, they can also travel in packs, each one latching on to a vulnerable part of another monster as they drink their fill. That being said, they only have 2 hit points, which is probably about as much damage as an electric flyswatter does. Who cares, when an innocent-looking rock formation may actually turn out to be a flesh-eating monster.
A roper will eat anything that wanders too close to it, often attacking quickly and surprising its prey. It has one big, unsettling eye, that snaps open just before it begins devouring its catch.
All in all, it looks suspiciously similar to a squid made out of rocks, though the only thing that could make it more unsettling would be the ability to shoot ink as a defense mechanism. A yochlol looks just about as weird as its name sounds, at least in its true form. The creature is described as "a tower of yellow slime with a single malevolent eye" in the Monster Manual, which is about as accurate of a description as it's possible to get.The sinister mind flayer is waiting patiently to eat your brains, while the gelatinous cube shambles through dungeons digesting nearly everything in its path.
There's always a new threat. One glance at a beholder is enough to assess its foul and otherworldly nature. Yet the scariest monsters you hope never to encounter are not the ones that are just going to put up a tough fight. These creatures have an extra element that makes them particularly monstrous. It can be because they don't die even when you destroy their bodies, or because falling into their clutches means a slow, particularly painful death or because they jump from the shadows when least expected.
These additions make them much creepier than your average monster. Some give you chills just thinking about them, which is what makes them the scariest of all. On this list? In a world with dragons? Oozes are hard to spot. They easily blend in with shadows in a dark passage or remain so clear you have no idea they're right in front of you. The different types include black pudding, gray ooze, and the classic gelatinous cube. While your friends can try to help you escape if you're caught by one, they'll have to do their best to not get sucked in too!
It's a rather torturous death if you end up in their path, which is what makes them so frightening. Intellect devourers may be considered tiny aberrations, but if they get you you're a goner. The Monster Manual describes them as walking brains "protected by a crusty covering and set on bestial clawed legs.
It knows everything that creature knew as it takes over the body to do its masters' bidding. Even if it's driven out of the body, the only way to restore the creature's brain is with a powerful wish spell. Your best friend could be controlled by an intellect devourer on the orders of a mind flayer and you might never know! The idea of having your brain consumed and just becoming an evil puppet is truly terrible.
These creatures are from a time before the gods apparently arrived, so the fact that they're that ancient already should set off warning bells in your mind. Unhappy with their loss of power in the world due to the gods, they strive to retake that power and will use the masses to do it.
Aboleths stick to water environments and have telepathic powers they use to contact mortals, discover their desires, and use this knowledge to turn them into slaves. Their presence can warp the environment around them and their lairs give them additional nasty abilities for adventurers to contend with. Add to that the fact that if their body is destroyed they don't just die but go to the elemental plane of water where a new body is created in days or months, and this is not a monster you want to ever get on the bad side of!
If they haven't recovered from their grudge with the gods, they certainly won't forget you. Beholders are paranoid creatures that see all other beings as inferior, which of course leads to them not thinking much of taking the lives of others and can even lead to them becoming dangerous tyrants.

You could even have them fight to a draw only to decide to help each other battle some gargoyles or search for a temple of elemental evil. Chimera Challenge Rating: 6 A chimeras looks like a mess with the heads of a lion, goat and dragon and various body parts to match each. Chimeras also take the worst features of each creating a greedy, territorial and stubborn monster, any of which can be used to gain advantage by smart adventurers.
With three attacks, this monster can be a good solo monster challenge sitting up on the mountains for your adventurers. Harpy Challenge Rating: 1 Sadistic and always on the hunt, the luring song of harpies will charm those withing feet that can hear it. Harpies collect treasures and trophies from their victims in their hard to find lairs. Use a harpy lair as a beginner quest or a place to throw some loot your adventurers will need to fight more powerful monsters.
Peryton Challenge Rating: 2 This monster which has the head of a stag and body of a bird roosts and has its lair in the mountains. It likes to eat humans, elves and half-elves and needs a fresh heart of a humanoid to reproduce. These monsters have an unnatural hunger and will fight to the death or relentlessly hunt its prey if somehow driven away. A good setting to encounter a pteranodon would be near a coastal mountain range or in a lost world located in a mountain valley.
Red Dragon Challenge Rating: 4 to 24 Red dragons are vain, arrogant, impulsive, ferocious, greedy and have a general disdain for any other creatures. These overlords can usually be found perched high in the mountains where they can look over their territory when not sleeping in their lair surrounded by slaves.
Roc Challenge Rating: 11 These giant birds of prey have wingspans feet or more. Rocs live long, solitary lives, high up in the mountains.
When they leave to hunt they travel far soaring above the clouds looking for large prey such as elephants, whales, or an unlucky ships or caravans. Troll Challenge Rating: 5 These regenerative monsters have horrific appetites and will eat anything they can catch.
The classic troll under a bridge is fun, but try placing a troll as front-line mercenary being paid in food working for ogres, orcs or giants in a mountain encounter.
Stone Giant Challenge Rating: 7 These reclusive and quiet artists are peaceful until disturbed by loud and obnoxious adventurers from the ground below. Have your adventurers interrupt the slumber of a giant for a tough solo battle in a mountain cave or send your adventurers on a hunt to steal some one of their stone carvings. Yeti and Abominal Yeti Challenge Rating: 3 and 9 High in the icy mountains, your adventurers are terrified by a horrible howl traveling on the wind.
A huge abominable yeti is already hunting them and will not stop until its hunt is over and blood has spilled on the snow.
Have hungry yeti rampage against a mountain village to turn your heroes into hunters.
