The Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago is one of those events in Tuscany that anyone in love with the Opera cannot miss. A recording of the performance was later released by RCA Victor on vinyl record, tape and compact disc. It is the only recording ever made of a Puccini opera by its original conductor see Recording history below. Although often called a novel, the book has no unified plot. Early in the composition stage Puccini was in dispute with the composer Leoncavallowho said that he had offered Puccini a completed libretto and felt that Puccini should defer to him.
Puccini responded that he had had no idea of Leoncavallo's interest and that having been working on his own version for some time, he felt that he could not oblige him by discontinuing with the opera. Leoncavallo completed his own version in which Marcello was sung by a tenor and Rodolfo by a baritone.
It was unsuccessful and is now rarely performed. Much of the libretto is original. The main actions of acts two and three are the librettists' invention, with only a few passing references to incidents and characters in Murger. Most of acts one and four follow the book, piecing together episodes from various chapters.
The published libretto includes a note from the librettists briefly discussing their adaptation. The role of Rodolfo was played by Evan Gorga with Cesira Ferrani as Mimi, but Gorga was unable to accommodate the high tessitura and the music had to be transposed down for him.

However, that festival has not shown much interest in the operas of Puccini, only ever having one production each of Tosca and Turandot in its entire history. Despite the opera's popularity with audiences, Puccini has been the target of condescension by some music critics who find his music insufficiently sophisticated or difficult.
In spite of its neatness, I became sickened by the cheapness and emptiness of the music. Marcello is painting while Rodolfo gazes out of the window. They complain of the cold. In order to keep warm, they burn the manuscript of Rodolfo's drama. Colline, the philosopher, enters shivering and disgruntled at not having been able to pawn some books. Schaunard, the musician of the group, arrives with food, wine and cigars. He explains the source of his riches: a job with an eccentric English gentlemanwho ordered him to play his violin to a parrot until it died.
The others hardly listen to his tale as they set up the table to eat and drink. Schaunard interrupts, telling them that they must save the food for the days ahead: tonight they will all celebrate his good fortune by dining at Cafe Momus, and he will pay.
They flatter him and ply him with wine. In his drunkenness, he begins to boast of his amorous adventures, but when he also reveals that he is married, they thrust him from the room—without the rent payment—in comic moral indignation. The rent money is divided for their evening out in the Quartier Latin. Marcello, Schaunard and Colline go out, but Rodolfo remains alone for a moment in order to finish an article he is writing, promising to join his friends soon.

As it has every summer for 27 years, the Bard Music Festival at SummerScape welcomed scholars, cognoscenti, enthused amateurs, and thrill-seeking musical laity to the Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York for a multi-perspective and interdisciplinary exploration of the work, life, and influences of a single major musical figure. Kicking the weekend off on Friday evening, August 12, at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts though not attended for this article was a concert and mixed media program — music, poetry, audio, and film clips — provocatively placing Puccini in the context of Italian Futurism, that early twentieth-century movement of avant-gardists jazzed by the prospect of a coming age to be lit, fueled, and propelled by electricity.

The performers in this semi-staged presentation were all excellent. Indeed, the very choice to play it straight provided for a spontaneous combustion of meta-theater.

Because that's what St. Mary's College marketing students found in an audience survey requested last fall by Festival Opera, the 9-year- old Walnut Creek nonprofit organization mounting three operas this season at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts. Through interviews and yes focus groups, the students learned that many who attended the Lesher Regional Center performances said they'd feel, as Festival Opera board member Bob Rezak puts it, "a lot more comfortable about opera if they knew about what they were going to hear or see before they got to the theater.
In other words, some folks who thought a "score" was a ballgame tally and a "libretto" a place to borrow books felt a little intimidated in the face of onstage sturm und drang.
The solution? Enter James Keolkeropera whiz. In a series of three free "previews" commissioned by Festival Opera, Keolker will caution: overused academic term ahead deconstruct productions Festival Opera is offering for its season -- Gioachino Rossini 's "The Barber of Seville," Gaetano Donizetti 's "Elixir of Love" and Jules Massanet 's "Werther.
There's no other art form that allows simultaneous thought. It's up to the composer musically to make that intelligible to you.
Where the composer fails, Keolker will help. Keolker will play samples of the opera and explicate its musical, orchestral and lyrical aspects, as well as its historical and sociological context. He says he will look at the piece incrementally, even scene by scene, to help opera novices and veterans understand characters' motivations and how they relate to the score and libretto.
Each of Keolker's previews will be supplemented by performance- night pre-curtain lectures by Ted WeisFestival Opera's founder and director.
Weis says that Festival Opera productions usually involve about performers who are auditioned and hired by artistic director Olivia Stapp.
For his part, Keolker brings a wealth of experience to his preview series. He sees the preview series as a way to acquaint Contra Costa opera-goers with an art form that, while initially challenging or even off-putting, can be rich in heritage and artistic rewards.
